uniting through tragedy...

I know i've posted this blog everywhere, but it's only because I feel that it's really something to think about. Life is a gift, and something that everyone should learn to appreciate.
On August 8, 2008, a charter bus plunged off a highway in Sherman, Texas when the front right tire blew and the driver lost control, the guardrail lacking the strength to support the massive vehicle. On that bus were 54 Vietnamese catholics headed towards Carthage, MO intending to participate in the annual Marian Days. Of those 54 passengers, 12 were pronounced dead at the scene.
Friday morning, I woke up only to hear the dreadful news announced on the intercom. Conversations soon sprouted about the accident, information and updates spreading only by word of mouth. Sharing the same destination as the victims brought a shock to so many of us.
As the day wore on I watched and saw so many people praying. Masses were in memory of those that passed and their mourning family members. United by this tragedy, over 60,000 people gathered together to pray for them, feeling connected to the victims who were to most, complete strangers, but to others, friends and family.
I also went to the Marian Days festival with other church members on a charter bus. It being the second year traveling by bus, I took a safe arrival for granted. Now safely at home, with the articles and newsclips everywhere, the spreading story I heard when waking up in my tent becomes so real.
That could have been me. Us. Our bus. That could have been our bus.
But it wasn't.
The occurrance of this tragedy was not a punishment from God, but a lesson for us to learn and a door meant for us to walk through.
We all live lives that lack perpetuality. It's up you to make every single day worth living and to appreciate what you have.
I hope that anyone who reads this will take just a few moments to pray for the victims and their families.
Pray a little, give a little, learn a little, help a little.
It only takes a little bit to change a lot.
